Why Europe and China Are Moving Away from Car Touchscreens

For the past decade, the automotive industry has been obsessed with replacing traditional dashboard controls with massive, high-tech touchscreens. From climate control to entertainment, almost every function in a modern vehicle has been integrated into digital displays. However, a significant shift is underway. Automotive safety regulators and consumers in both Europe and China are beginning to reject all-touchscreen interfaces, demanding the return of physical buttons and dials to improve safety and usability on the road.

The primary driver behind this sudden backlash is safety. Unlike physical buttons, which drivers can locate and operate using muscle memory without taking their eyes off the road, touchscreens require visual attention. Selecting a menu option or adjusting the temperature on a smooth glass screen forces drivers to look away from traffic, significantly increasing the risk of accidents. Recognizing this danger, the European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP) has introduced new guidelines that will penalize vehicles without physical controls for critical functions like turn signals, wipers, and hazard lights starting in 2026.

In China, the world's largest automotive market, consumer preferences are also shifting. While tech-savvy buyers initially embraced futuristic digital cockpits, real-world usage has highlighted the frustration of laggy software, fingerprint smudges, and complicated menus. Car manufacturers are now looking to strike a balance, combining beautiful digital displays for navigation with tactile, physical switches for essential driving functions. This return to analog controls marks a mature phase in car design, where driver safety and practical ergonomics are once again prioritized over superficial high-tech aesthetics.
