1. STRAIT OF HORMUZ: OIL TANKER HIT AND BURNS
The UK Maritime Trade Operations said it received a third-party report that a tanker was struck by an unknown projectile and caught fire on Oct. 1 while transiting the Strait of Hormuz, about 8 km off Oman. Some sources said the vessel may have been carrying about 2.5 million barrels; casualties and environmental damage have not been officially confirmed. In the same area, Houthi (Ansarallah) forces have taken control of Mokha and strategic islands near Bab al-Mandab, including Perim (Mayun) and Hanish. The developments heighten risks to a critical oil-shipping route.

2. US BUILDS UP FORCES, IRAN SAYS IT STILL SEEKS DIALOGUE
The US is sending thousands more troops and the USS Theodore Roosevelt carrier strike group toward the Middle East, joining the USS George H.W. Bush, USS George Washington and USS Boxer amphibious ready group. President Trump said intensified bombing against Iran after the Nov. 3 midterm elections is possible. Washington also imposed new sanctions on Iranian automotive and railway companies; Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the measures reduce funding for Iran's war machine. Iran's president said Tehran will never avoid dialogue with the United States.

3. IRAQ SAYS ANTI-ISIS COALITION HAS FULLY WITHDRAWN
Prime Minister Ali Falih Al-Zaidi announced that the US-led international coalition against ISIS has fully withdrawn, saying Iraq has achieved full national sovereignty and that Oct. 1 starts a new phase. Iraq's transport ministry said Iraqi Airways will resume Najaf-Iran flights in October after receiving a US sanctions waiver. The shift marks a significant change in foreign military presence and Baghdad-Tehran relations.

4. GAZA DEATH TOLL REPORTED ABOVE 74,000
Gaza's health ministry said 74,040 people have been killed and 175,168 wounded since Oct. 7, 2023. Israeli strikes killed three Palestinians, including an Al-Qassam Brigades commander; Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan condemned "crimes against humanity" and pledged to push for accountability. The casualty figures come from Gaza's health ministry and have not been independently verified.

5. RUSSIA AND NATO TRADE NUCLEAR-RELATED WARNINGS
Russia sent a diplomatic note warning it would use the full range of its forces, including nuclear weapons, if NATO tried to blockade Kaliningrad; NATO rejected the warning as baseless. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said European weapons factories producing for Ukraine could become legitimate military targets; EU Defense Commissioner Andrius Kubilius responded that a strike on a European arms factory would trigger NATO Article 5.

6. BOND YIELDS AND OIL SURGE GLOBALLY
The US 10-year Treasury yield hit 5.34% intraday, a 24-year high; the UK 30-year gilt reached 6.029%, the highest since 1998; France's 10-year yield touched 4.963%. Brent crude rose more than 4% and climbed above $100 a barrel after Chinese refiners halted October fuel-product exports and the US reinforced its Middle East presence. This adds pressure on global borrowing costs and energy prices.

7. SPAIN FACES HOUSING-DECREE VOTE
Spain's Congress of Deputies votes on Oct. 2 on whether to validate two government housing decrees, amid growing social protests including a sit-in at Madrid's Puerta del Sol. Junts said it would vote against, leaving the government short of the required votes. A defeat could deepen political instability and public discontent over the housing crisis.

8. OTHER DEVELOPMENTS ACROSS ASIA, AFRICA AND THE AMERICAS
China's UN ambassador Fu Cong delivered a joint statement on behalf of 28 countries, including Russia, Cuba, North Korea, Venezuela and Iran, urging an end to unilateral coercive measures. Nigeria's army said it thwarted an attempt to kidnap at least 41 Senegalese tourists. UN Women warned that 82% of women-led organizations in Afghanistan are at risk of closure due to falling international aid. Flydubai suspended flights to and from Israel after an emergency landing in Tabuk; UAE, Saudi and Israeli authorities are investigating a reported cockpit stabbing. Brazil and the United States agreed to form a working group on tariffs after talks in Milwaukee with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer.

What to watch today: Spain's Congress votes on two housing decrees; OAS foreign ministers hold an extraordinary meeting on Nicaragua.
