The Legacy of HAGL JMG Academy: Where Are the First Stars Now?

In 2007, a revolution began in Vietnamese football with the establishment of the HAGL Arsenal JMG Academy. This ambitious project, led by 'Bau' Duc, aimed to produce a new generation of technically gifted players who could elevate the national team. The first and second classes of the academy produced stars who became household names, such as Cong Phuong, Tuan Anh, Xuan Truong, Van Thanh, and Van Toan. These players first captured the nation's heart as part of the U19 Vietnam squad, playing a beautiful, attacking style of football that had never been seen before in the country. However, their transition to professional V-League football and international stints has been a journey of both triumph and hardship.

Today, the 'Golden Generation' of HAGL has largely moved on to new chapters. Vu Van Thanh was one of the first to taste major success after leaving, winning the V-League 2023 title with Cong An Ha Noi. Nguyen Van Toan and Nguyen Phong Hong Duy have become key pillars for Nam Dinh FC, helping the team lead the current V-League standings. Meanwhile, Nguyen Cong Phuong continues his journey abroad with Yokohama FC in Japan, despite facing challenges in securing playing time. Luong Xuan Truong, after a period of injuries, is seeking to rediscover his form at Ha Tinh on loan. Some, like Tran Huu Dong Trieu, have officially retired to pursue coaching or other careers. The story of the HAGL JMG Academy is one of great hope and valuable lessons. While they didn't win as many domestic trophies as fans expected during their time together at Pleiku, their impact on the popularity and technical development of Vietnamese football is immeasurable.
