Over 1,000 Low-Income Social Housing Apartments Left Abandoned

A paradox has emerged in the Vietnamese real estate market as more than 1,000 low-income social housing apartments remain completely abandoned and unused, despite a severe shortage of affordable housing for workers. These vacant apartment complexes, built with the intention of supporting low-income families and factory workers, highlight significant challenges in urban planning, project execution, and administrative procedures. Industry experts point to several key reasons for this situation. Firstly, many of these social housing projects are located in remote areas with poor infrastructure, lacking convenient access to public transportation, schools, hospitals, and markets, making them highly inconvenient for daily life. Secondly, the strict eligibility criteria and complex bureaucratic processes required to purchase or rent these apartments have deterred many potential buyers who desperately need housing. Additionally, concerns regarding the construction quality and the lack of basic amenities have made these developments less appealing. This issue represents a massive waste of land resources and capital, especially at a time when major cities like Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City are struggling to meet the housing demands of their growing populations. Addressing this crisis requires urgent coordination between local authorities, developers, and urban planners to improve surrounding infrastructure, simplify purchasing procedures, and ensure that social housing projects are built in locations that truly serve the needs of low-income communities.
