Hanoi Narrow Alleys Present Major Challenges for Fire Prevention

The historic city of Hanoi, Vietnam, is famous for its charming, labyrinthine alleys, locally known as 'ngõ' and 'ngách'. While these narrow pathways offer a unique glimpse into traditional daily life, they present a massive and dangerous challenge for modern fire prevention and rescue services. According to a report by VnExpress, many of these alleys are so narrow—sometimes less than a meter wide—that standard firefighting trucks and emergency vehicles cannot access them in the event of a disaster.

This urban planning issue is compounded by high-density housing, where homes are built closely together, often featuring iron cages (known as 'chuồng cọp') over balconies for security, which unfortunately block emergency escape routes. Additionally, the tangled webs of overhead electrical wires hanging across these alleys pose a severe risk of short circuits and make navigation even more hazardous for firefighters. In the event of a fire, residents living deep within these alleys have very limited escape options, and emergency responders must drag heavy water hoses hundreds of meters to reach the flames, losing precious time.

To combat these challenges, the Hanoi government and local communities have been implementing proactive safety measures. These include installing public fire extinguisher stations, organizing community fire drills, and encouraging households to create alternative emergency exits. However, raising public awareness and modernizing old infrastructure remain critical steps in ensuring the safety of millions of residents living in Hanoi's iconic but high-risk alleyways.
