00The Ho Chi Minh City Ao Dai Festival recently opened with a spectacular display of fashion and culture at the Nguyen Hue Walking Street. Among the 800 designs showcased by 30 renowned designers, the 'Huong sac Viet' (Vietnamese Fragrance) collection by Duc Vincie stood out as a highlight of the evening. The closing performance featured Miss Vietnam 2018, Tran Tieu Vy, who mesmerized the audience in a custom-designed Ao Dai featuring a staggering 10-meter-long train. This masterpiece was inspired by the fire phoenix, a mythical creature symbolizing rebirth, dignity, and the noble spirit of the Vietnamese woman.
Designer Duc Vincie spent over three weeks meticulously planning the collection, from initial sketches to the final printing process on high-quality organza silk. The choice of materials was a deliberate nod to Vietnam's rich textile heritage, as the fabrics were sourced from traditional silk-weaving villages like Nha Xa and Bao Loc. The garment worn by Tieu Vy featured two layers of fabric designed to mimic the wings of a phoenix in flight, glowing vibrantly against a black background. Despite the weight and length of the 10-meter train, Tieu Vy demonstrated her professional catwalk skills, gliding gracefully across the stage to the cheers of the crowd.
For Tieu Vy, wearing the Ao Dai is more than just a fashion choice; it is a responsibility. Having been crowned for six years, she has consistently used her platform to promote the national dress both domestically and internationally. She shared that whenever she travels abroad, the Ao Dai is her first choice for representing the beauty and soul of Vietnamese women. The festival itself, organized by the HCMC Department of Tourism and the Women's Union, serves a dual purpose: preserving traditional values and promoting Ho Chi Minh City as a vibrant cultural destination for global travelers.
The 'Huong sac Viet' collection successfully blended traditional silhouettes with modern printing and tailoring techniques, making the Ao Dai more appealing to younger generations. By incorporating elements like stylized collars and elaborate capes (man), Duc Vincie has shown that traditional attire can evolve while still maintaining its core identity. The event also featured other notable collections such as 'Sac mau di san' and 'Nét đẹp Á Đông,' all contributing to a night that celebrated the enduring elegance of the Vietnamese Ao Dai. This fusion of celebrity influence, high fashion, and cultural pride continues to keep the spirit of the Ao Dai alive in the modern world.
