00Lunar New Year, or Tet, is the most cherished holiday in Vietnamese culture. It is a time for family reunions, honoring ancestors, and enjoying traditional foods. Interestingly, even for Vietnam’s most famous "rich kids" and high-profile influencers, the festive season is not about luxury dining, but rather about embracing simple, traditional comfort foods. During the 2024 Tet holiday, several prominent young figures shared their love for authentic Vietnamese dishes, showing that cultural heritage always comes first.
One of the most talked-about moments came from Gia Ky, a popular TikToker and well-known rich kid currently living abroad. To bring the warm spirit of Tet to her overseas home, Gia Ky decided to cook a traditional pot of thịt kho tàu (caramelized pork belly with eggs) for the very first time. Navigating the recipe by intuition and a deep longing for home, she successfully prepared the dish alongside a beautifully decorated holiday space featuring traditional flowers and a classic five-fruit tray (mâm ngũ quả). Her followers praised her dedication to preserving Vietnamese traditions while living far from home.
Similarly, Gen Z influencer Chao (Chau Anh), who is currently studying in the United States, celebrated a cozy Tet away from home with her close friends. Chao hosted a warm hotpot gathering, bringing a sense of community to her student life. Of course, no Vietnamese New Year is complete without bánh chưng (the iconic square sticky rice cake), which proudly occupied the center of her festive table, offering a delicious taste of nostalgia.
Meanwhile, back in Vietnam, Tien Nguyen, the fashion-forward daughter of billionaire Johnathan Hanh Nguyen, showed off her culinary skills by hand-wrapping bánh tét (cylindrical sticky rice cake). Known for her luxurious lifestyle and love for international fine dining, Tien Nguyen fully embraced the rustic charm of Tet preparations. Her family's holiday feast was a beautiful display of traditional Vietnamese cuisine, featuring vibrant green bánh chưng, savory thịt kho tàu, pickled onions (dưa hành), and various traditional sausages (giò chả).
These heartwarming stories demonstrate that no matter how luxurious one's lifestyle may be, the true essence of Lunar New Year lies in the simple joy of preparing and sharing traditional dishes with loved ones. These comforting foods serve as a powerful cultural bridge, connecting young Vietnamese people to their heritage, whether they are celebrating at home or thousands of miles away.
