00Vietnam is a land rich in spiritual traditions, but few events are as mysterious and captivating as the Yin-Yang Market (Phiên chợ Âm Dương) in Bac Ninh province. This unique market, located in Lang O (O Village), opens only once a year on the night of the 4th and the early morning of the 5th day of the first Lunar Month (Tháng Giêng). According to local folklore, this is the precise time when the gates of the underworld are temporarily opened, allowing the souls of the deceased to return to the earthly realm and reunite with their living relatives.
Unlike any ordinary marketplace, the Yin-Yang Market is wrapped in an eerie yet deeply touching atmosphere. There are no bright electric lights; the entire area is illuminated only by the soft, flickering glow of candles and oil lamps. Visitors will notice a striking absence of the typical market noise. There is no bargaining, no loud laughter, and no counting of money. People believe that loud noises and greed might frighten or offend the visiting spirits. Instead, buyers and sellers communicate in quiet, respectful whispers, creating a peaceful and solemn environment.
The transactions here carry a symbolic, spiritual meaning rather than a commercial one. The most sought-after items at the market are black chickens (gà đen) and various spiritual offerings or votive papers. Buying and selling at this market is viewed as a way to share luck, discard bad fortune ("mua may, bán rủi"), and perform acts of charity for those in the afterlife. It is a place where the boundary between the physical and spiritual worlds blurs, offering comfort to those who wish to feel close to their lost loved ones once more.
After being disrupted for years, this beautiful cultural tradition was officially restored during the Lunar New Year of 2022 (Tết Nhâm Dần). Since then, it has attracted thousands of curious travelers and spiritual seekers from across Vietnam and beyond who wish to experience its mystical charm. As dawn approaches and the market begins to disperse, the atmosphere shifts to a warm, communal celebration. The remaining attendees gather to share hot tea, chew betel nuts, and sing traditional Quan Ho folk songs, a signature cultural heritage of the Bac Ninh region. This transition from the quiet mystery of the night to the melodic warmth of the morning beautifully symbolizes the harmony between the living and the dead, making the Yin-Yang Market an unforgettable cultural experience for anyone visiting Northern Vietnam.
