00Renowned designer and former Miss Vietnam Ngoc Han has successfully bridged the gap between traditional Vietnamese art and modern fashion with her latest Ao Dai collection. Inspired by the rare and historic Kim Hoang folk paintings, this stunning collection made its grand debut at the 'Noi toi sinh ra' (Where I Was Born) art program held at the historic Temple of Literature (Van Mieu-Quoc Tu Giam) in Hanoi, as well as at the Vietnam Ao Dai Fashion Week in Fukuoka, Japan.
Kim Hoang folk art, originating in the late 18th century from Kim Hoang village in Hoai Duc district, Hanoi, was once as celebrated as the famous Dong Ho and Hang Trong art styles. Often referred to as 'red paintings' due to the vibrant red, pink, and orange peach-colored paper used as a canvas, these artworks traditionally depict rural northern Vietnamese life, including familiar animals like pigs and roosters. Tragically, a catastrophic flood in 1915 destroyed most of the woodblocks, pushing the art form into obscurity for over seven decades until dedicated researchers and artisans began reviving it in 2015.
Captivated by the unique charm of the paintings during a visit to Dinh Kim Ngan in Hanoi's Old Quarter, Ngoc Han sought out artisan Dao Dinh Chung—the sole heir actively preserving this craft. Together, they embarked on a journey to translate the delicate woodblock prints onto the flowing silhouette of the Ao Dai. Unlike mass-printed art, each Kim Hoang painting has its own soul, as artisans hand-color the black-ink outlines, giving characters like the 'Thần kê' (sacred rooster) or the prosperous 'pig' distinct, cloud-like features.
To bring these ancient motifs to life on fabric, Ngoc Han utilized advanced 3D printing and modern textile techniques on premium materials such as silk, tafta, and traditional Vietnamese crepe (đũi). The collection features both classic tailored waists and comfortable loose-fitting designs, catering to the aesthetic preferences of modern women. By blending cultural heritage with contemporary fashion, Ngoc Han's Kim Hoang Ao Dai collection does more than just showcase beautiful garments; it breathes new life into a forgotten national treasure, allowing cultural history to walk the streets of the modern world and reach international audiences.
