Ancient Military Might: Discovering the Unique Le Dynasty Weapon Collection at Hanoi's Giảng Võ School Exhibition

The Hanoi Museum is currently hosting a remarkable exhibition titled 'Giảng Võ School and the Le Dynasty Weapon Collection,' featuring over 200 rare artifacts and documents. This collection offers a fascinating look at the Giảng Võ school, the first national military academy of the ancient Thang Long citadel. Established during the Ly Dynasty and significantly expanded through the Tran and Le eras, this site served as a high-level training ground for generals and soldiers for over three centuries. The artifacts on display were largely recovered from archeological excavations at Ngoc Khanh Lake in 1983, confirming the area's historical role as a military training hub. One of the most significant pieces is the 'súng lệnh' (signal gun) made of bronze, used by commanders to relay orders on the battlefield through colored flares. The exhibition also showcases stone cannonballs and 'phác vật'—unfinished weapon blanks that prove the Giảng Võ school was not just a training ground but also a self-sufficient military manufacturing center. Other interesting items include 'tín bài' (wooden identity tags) used to distinguish military ranks and units, and architectural remains like terracotta dragon heads that signify the site's national importance. Each piece was handcrafted using traditional forging techniques, making this a one-of-a-kind collection in Vietnam.
