00In Ho Chi Minh City, the 'God of Wealth Day' (Via Than Tai), which falls on the 10th day of the Lunar New Year, is a major event for business owners and families seeking luck and prosperity. One of the most essential offerings for this day is grilled snakehead fish (ca loc nuong). On Tan Ky Tan Quy Street in Tan Phu District, the atmosphere becomes incredibly intense as stalls prepare thousands of fish to meet the massive demand. One particular stall, owned by Mr. Ly Van Trung, reported importing 4 tons of fresh snakehead fish—approximately 4,000 individual fish—to serve customers this year.
The preparation process is a massive logistical undertaking. Mr. Trung hired 40 workers to work through the night, ensuring that the fish are grilled to perfection. The tradition of offering grilled snakehead fish for the God of Wealth has specific requirements: the fish must remain whole, meaning the scales, fins, and tail are not removed. Before grilling, a piece of sugarcane is inserted into the fish's mouth, which helps keep the meat sweet and moist throughout the cooking process over hot charcoal.
Despite the high demand, prices have remained relatively stable compared to previous years, ranging from 180,000 to 250,000 VND per fish, depending on the size. This price typically includes fresh vegetables, vermicelli, and a specialized dipping sauce. Skillful grilling is required to achieve a golden-brown skin without burning the meat, which is why experienced 'grill masters' are highly sought after during this period. The smoke from the hundreds of grills creates a unique, bustling scene that has become a hallmark of the neighborhood during Tet.
For many Saigonese, purchasing a grilled snakehead fish is a vital ritual to invite good fortune into their homes and businesses. Stalls like 'Cuc Bui' also see high volumes of both wholesale and retail customers. As the sun rises on the 10th day, the streets are lined with people eager to bring home this symbolic dish, hoping that the 'God of Wealth' will bless them with a year of abundance and success.
